| The vision statement of the Samtel Group talks about business excellence impacting nation building and caring for the environment and society. The vision statement gives a direction to all our businesses regarding the importance the group lays on caring for the environment and society. Safety, Occupational Health & Environment is also one of the important initiatives of the Samtel Quality Movement (SQM). The leadership to this movement and initiative is provided personally by our CMD Mr. Satish Kaura.
| Be it effluent treatment, air pollution
control, resource conservation, environment education to employees and
the surrounding community, environment protection, occupational health
protection or safety of people and assets, Samtel has demonstrated
environment consciousness in every sphere.
-
All our manufacturing facilities have effluent treatment plants, which are more than adequate with respect to Indian Standards.
-
In the area of air pollution control, Samtel Glass Limited (Kota) is the only glass plant in the country, which is equipped with a four field electrostatic precipitator.
-
Samtel takes care of natural resources. Waste water after treatment is not only reused in the process but at two of our facilities treated water is converted into de-ionized water, which is much more pure than normal drinking water and is used in some of our critical manufacturing processes.
-
Besides this, Samtel has implemented various programs to replenish natural resources like water harvesting. Also, technical know how has been provided to the surrounding community to adopt this program for their own benefit.
-
Plantation of trees in and around our facilities has been one of our regular programs and we have succeeded in providing more than 40% green cover.
-
In our manufacturing activities, we have eliminated the use of many hazardous chemicals and also replaced a few hazardous chemicals with non-hazardous or less hazardous chemicals.
-
We have been organizing various training and awareness programs in environment and hygiene education for surrounding communities.
CDM Project at Samtel Glass:For assisting developed countries in reducing emissions up to specified level and helping them in reducing cost of such reduction a marketing mechanism was developed called Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) on the ground that emission reduction at any place across the globe will benefit the global environment equally. CDM is a mechanism established and developed under Kyoto Protocol to reduce Green House Gas emissions. Under CDM, Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) are allotted to the projects in developing countries, which result in reduction of green house gases emissions in addition to the business as usual scenario. Each CER is equivalent to one ton of CO2 green house gas reduction. The CERs can be traded and sold. Buyers in developed countries to meet a part of their emission reduction targets under Kyoto Protocol can buy these credits from CDM Project Developers in developing countries. CDM Executive Board in Bonn, Germany has specified and authorized various agencies to govern the whole procedure. Samtel Glass conceptualized a CDM Project in 2004 for Switching of fossil fuel from HSD to Natural Gas by replacing the Diesel engines with Gas engines at Kota. as a contribution towards reduction of green house gases and global warming. After going through the CDM Project registration and verification procedure, this year 6217 CERs have been sold to a buyer from Switzerland. The project was conceptualized with our concern for emission of high amount of CO2 in the environment by HSD based Caterpillar Sets installed for captive power. It was proposed and approved by our management to implement the CDM Project of installation Gas based Cummins Sets which would emit far less CO2 in the environment.Samtel Glass Limited has been certified for Environment Management System (ISO 14001) and Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OHSAS 18001). Samtel Glass has also received a Blue Sticker Rating from Corning Incorporated, USA for its innovative efforts in water treatment and conservation.
